A selection of Maestro Raimonds Pauls’ melodies from different periods has been brought together in a special project, with English lyrics written by internationally acclaimed American songwriter Gordon Pogoda. These songs will be performed by the powerhouse vocalist Shayna Steele — herself a songwriter, as well as a Broadway and television singer and actress from New York.
Steele’s vocal range, versatility, and wide array of influences — from jazz to gospel, soul, and folk — encompass everything that defines the American musical canon.
She has appeared in television series familiar to Latvian audiences such as The Sopranos and The Penguin, while her vocals can be heard in the films Hairspray, In the Heights, The Bourne Identity, and Sex and the City 2. Steele has also collaborated with music stars such as Moby, Rihanna, Bette Midler, Chris Botti, and Snarky Puppy, and has performed as a guest soloist with more than 40 American symphony orchestras, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, and the Philly Pops.
“I always take very seriously any project dedicated to something already well-known — or even sacred — to others. I wanted to show the utmost respect to the original melodies and to Maestro himself. My contribution to these songs came from an artist’s and vocalist’s true heart.”
— Shayna Steele
The fusion of Steele’s powerful R’n’B and jazz-inflected vocals with Maestro Raimonds Pauls’ beautiful melodies, performed by the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra and the Latvian Radio Big Band, will be a magnificent gift in celebration of the Maestro’s milestone anniversary.
