Iveta Apkalna – organ

At the festival’s Sunday concert, two leading figures of Latvian performing arts meet on stage – the State Choir Latvia and organist Iveta Apkalna. The programme features choral and organ works by Pēteris Vasks, including Laudate Dominum and Dona nobis pacem, as well as music from the album Iveta Apkalna, Vasks, Bach, Liszt – Triptychon, and works by other composers who are spiritual companions of Pēteris Vasks.

Iveta Apkalna is a world-renowned organist, often referred to as the “Queen of the Organ.” She regularly performs with leading conductors and orchestras, inaugurates new organs around the world, and combines outstanding virtuosity with profound musicality. Apkalna was the first organist to receive the prestigious ECHO Klassik Award and has released more than 15 albums.

Since 2017, Iveta Apkalna has served as Honorary Organist of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. She has performed in Europe, Asia, and the United States with such major orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Iveta Apkalna is a four-time recipient of the Latvian Grand Music Award, a Commander of the Order of the Three Stars, and the initiator of the festival ORGANismi. In 2020 and 2024, she received Latvia’s public media award Kilograms of Culture in the category Music.
