As part of the festival’s chamber music program, opera soloist Maija Kovaļevska will give a concert featuring Pēteris Vasks’ chamber cantata “Latvia”, his song cycle “Love Songs”, and arrangements of Latvian folk songs. The program will also include gems of Latvian vocal music, such as Jāzeps Vītols’ “At Your High White Window” and “Close Your Eyes,” Jānis Mediņš’ “There Is an Evening,” and Lūcija Garūta’s “Moon Boat.”

Soprano Maija Kovaļevska is a world-renowned Latvian opera singer, who launched her brilliant international career with a victory at Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition in 2006.

In 2006, Maija Kovaļevska made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the role of Mimì. A year later, she performed the role of Euridice in Orpheus and Eurydice at the same opera house under the baton of maestro James Levine. She has sung over fifty roles at the Metropolitan Opera, including participating in the opera house’s 125th anniversary concert. In 2010, the singer made her debut at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden as Micaëla, and in 2011, she debuted at both the Vienna State Opera and Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
