The musical theatre production Alfas is inspired by real events that took place in Jēkabpils in January 2011, when four police officers and one civilian carried out an armed robbery at a gambling hall. The incident was followed by a police chase and a shootout during the arrest attempt on the banks of the Daugava River. The consequences were tragic - a police officer was killed while performing his duties and trying to apprehend the robbers.

These events coincided with the lowest point of the economic crisis and served as a harsh reminder of the values associated with Latvia’s “fat years” - bravado and the public glorification of an expensive, status-driven lifestyle built on credit. Although these events happened more than ten years ago and may seem like distant history, the same questions remain relevant today: how do we as a society understand concepts such as “determination,” “strength,” “masculinity,” and “heroism”?

By reinterpreting and fictionalizing these events in a dramatic musical form, the creators construct their own version of how personality traits, overconfidence, carelessness, and the country’s social climate converged into tragedy. The performance offers an opportunity to reflect on the role of men in society. How do men see themselves? What is expected of them? And how can one make sense of all this when faced with a dead end?

Please note: The performance contains gunshot sounds and strong language.

Preschool-age children will not be admitted to the concert.
